Construction stage on a modular CLT residential scheme in Laindon, Essex.

At C.F. Møller Architects I worked in the construction stage of a modular CLT residential scheme in Essex.

As the only Architectural Assistant on the project on the project, I was involved in decision-making and collaboration with various consultants and engineers from around Europe.

Sadly, although the buildings were already detailed and the foundations were under construction, fear of future regulations around mass-timer construction in the UK meant that the scheme was later changed to make use of steel modules, around concrete stair cores.

Modular CLT

The project was one of the first modular CLT projects in the UK, and the first in the C.F. Møller Architects group. Modules were to be manufactured in a nearby factory, before being transported to site, and craned into place.

Connections

Careful consideration had to be given to the connections between the modules to ensure the building remained water- and air-tight and that all fire regulations were adhered to.
